Raheem Sterling penalty: Footage PROVES Man City star tripped HIMSELF up against Shakhtar
After David Silva fired the hosts in front in the opening 15 minutes, Pep Guardiola’s side continued to push for a second goal of the evening. And a great chance fell to Raheem Sterling. The England international picked up the ball deep in Shakhtar’s half and set off at blistering speed into the box. However, the foward the tripped himself up by accidentally kicking the turf before he could get his shot away just outside the six-yard box. Staggeringly, referee Viktor Kassai awarded a penalty thinking Shakhtar defender Mykola Matvyenko had clipped Sterling. Despite Shakhtar’s protests, the referee stood by his decision and Gabriel Jesus stepped up to bury the spot-kick. Even members of the Etihad faithful admitted it wasn’t a penalty. “I'm a City fan. That wasn't even close to a pen,” one supporter tweeted. A second City supporter said: “Definitely wasn't a pen but I'll take it.” “Obviously not a penalty but we'll take it,” a third fan wrote. And, unsurprisingly, many supporters were quick criticise the referee, as well as Sterling. “That is an absolute disgrace, the decision by the referee, the dishonesty from Sterling (who should be booked for that after the game, by the way) but also the opposition for not kicking up a major storm about it! One of the biggest injustices in football I’ve ever seen!” one fan fumed. Another said: “Sterling is a cheat and the officials need sacking.” “Poor refereeing, Sterling should be confessing up for that......not a dive, he's kicked the floor,” a third wrote.
