Torrential rain has hit the Spanish island overnight with two British people killed in the floods.

It is understood at least 10 people have been tragically killed after muddy water engulfed the town of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar when a river burst its banks.

According to Spanish meteorological agency Aemet, more than 8in (20cm) of rainfall in just a few hours hit the island on Tuesday.

Nadal, a resident in the area, is recovering a knee injury suffered at last month’s US Open.

But the 32-year-old has swapped his racquet for a broom to help with clearing away the water.

Nadal has also opened up his tennis academy to help people displaced by the floods.

He wrote on Instagram: “Our most sincere condolences to the loved ones of the victims of the serious floods in Sant Llorenc.”

The Foreign Office said its staff "remain in contact" with their Spanish counterparts about the fate of any British people stranded in the area.
