Sex and the City pushed a lot of boundaries when it first premiered on HBO in 1998. Based off the kind of book you read in private, suddenly all those salacious scenes were brought to life on your TV screen.

The series is well-known for its high number of explicit sex scenes. But beyond its raunchiness, it deals with a number of difficult topics such as unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and breast cancer. At its core, though, the show is about living life with — or without — men, and what it takes to get and keep them. For every critic who applauded the show for empowering women through its portrayal of sex, another one berated it for being anti-feminist.

Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte are all guilty throughout of the series of putting the opposite sex before friendships and careers. But they’re also guilty of a lot more. It’s now been over 20 years since that first episode of Sex and the City aired, and a lot has changed about our perception of what’s acceptable — in TV and in life.

Despite some of the choices Sex and the City made purely for shock value, it also included some cringe-worthy scenes that would never fly today. Check out which ones made our list.
