Yellow Tip

Whilst I was investigating a problem that moshu was having using Apache2Triad with WP 1.3 Alpha* it was noted that A2T was now being bundled with PHP5 and there are some login problems with WP when using PHP5. Now as I say in my write-up on A2T they do have a reputation for being bang-up-to-date with the various bundled bits and pieces. There is no problem with this and I’m not going to stop recommending it. It is a good piece of software however, I remembered that I had seen a similar application somewhere but couldn’t remember where or what it was called so I did a bit of Googling and found this.

Yellow Tip comes bundled with Apache, MySQL, PHP4 (at the moment), PHPMyAdmin, phpBB2, b2evolution, PostNuke, Gallery and Zend Optimisation. It was an absolute doddle to install and, unlike A2T, at the end of the installation it asks you for a password and user name which it then applies to everything.

If you don’t know what this type of application does I should tell you that it turns your PC into a server, though it is set-up in a way that doesn’t allow it to be contacted from the outside world (you can contact them though). This means that you can install TXP, WP or any other application that might require PHP and/or MySQL and it will be fully functional right there on your PC. That’s quite handy. All 3 of the new designs here were done on Yellow Tip. Give it a whirl!

I install apache and php manually on my machine.

But you’re more clever than me at that stuff Matthew. I don’t know about the actual stick it on the machine bit of installing it yourself but the tweaking you must have to do afterwards to set it up properly is what makes me baulk at that idea. And why should I bother when there’s A2T and Yellow Tip around?

Stu this is serious. On FF 1.0 this page has no style sheet and the positioning is borked (badly). Its been like it for 2 days now.

I’m obviously not clever enough to check my writing before I post them (looks like I install php twice) lol. I think it’s this laptop I’m using, I keep brushing the touchpad and moving the cursor whilst typing.

The YellowTip stuff does sound good. In reality I only install the way I do so that it mirrors the stuff at work. It would be nice to have such a quick, efficient and working installation.

There is styling on this page for me (firefox 0.10.1)

Root – I think this is a cookie thing. As my layout is upside down with the menus at the top you should see the styles near the top on the left. Just pick one and you should be OK from then on. It’s probably because I’ve changed the default.

Matthew – I’m not sure I could get on with one of those touch-pads. I’ve modified your deliberate error.

When I first read that Craig at Nuke-Moose had installed the Apache Server on his machine for testing, I knew I wanted to. I’d been wanting to for awhile, but I just needed a prod. Well, that endeavor crashed and burned. Then I was poking around here and read about Apache Triad. It installed easily, but it never could get the MySQL server to work or at least wouldn’t recognize it. I run a wireless network and I just figured something was interfering. So I uninstalled it and gave up.

But now you offer the Great Yellow Hope. I’m off to play with Yellow Tip now. Thanks! I’ll let you know how it goes!

Joni I have been using Easyphp an all inone apache / mysql etc. A piece of cake even if you have no server side experience.

Stu layout and style all looking groovy now. All those style switchers seem to have that cookie glitch. I am fine now. It looks spiffy :)

Yes I think it’s when you change the default which I did moving from Bubblegum to The Bomb Site. TXP looks at your cookie and thinks “What the hell is it talking about? Here, have an un-styled page instead!” :-)

Yellow Tip is up and running and playing nicely with my wireless network. I love it!!

Oh, I just realise I’m 7 years behind, this thread is 2004! lol

16 October 2010, 20:43

Yes I think you might be a little behind with this one David.

Stuart, I had tried to contact you via the contact page on this web site about some paying TXP work, you never responded, I hope things are okay there. Give me a jingle when you can. :)))

And you too, Daveeeed! :D
