Wayward Pilot!
I have to post this immediately as I’ve just watched the weirdest thing. I’m about 20k from Birmingham International Airport. Planes that are in-bound fly directly over my apartment. You know they are in-bound because they are quite low. Not low enough to be noisy or anything but just low. As they fly away from me they have to do a sharp-right to get onto the flight path which I would estimate at about 2k from my apartment.
I’ve just been standing in my kitchen waiting for a cuppa to brew. A plane goes overhead and I know it’s in-bound as it is low. I can’t actually see the plane but of course I can’t miss all the flashing lights. So I’m watching this plane as it moves away from me waiting for it to make that sharp-right and guess what? It does a sharp-left! I’ve now forgotten about my brewing cuppa as my mind does a quick-fire question and answer routine with itself. Was it a plane or maybe a helicopter? Definitely a plane cuz I could see it when it was immediately overhead. It was just as it moved away that the outline got lost in the darkness. Was it in-bound or out-bound? Had to be in-bound at that height. Although I’m fairly close to the airport out-bound planes are way higher than that by the time they get here.
My mind-quizzing stopped suddenly as right before my eyes, the bunch of flashing lights that was the plane did a complete 180° turn to reverse it’s direction and get back to the one that it should have been travelling in.
It also occurred to me that, although they aren’t that high, I would have thought that they could have seen the airport from up there, particularly at night when the landing strip would be lit up like a Christmas tree!
Anyway, never trust a pilot to know where s/he is going nor even see where s/he is going. And check flight arrivals at Birmingham International for about 5.00am BST. If you can get the pilot’s name please let me have it so I can avoid his flights in future. ;)
It occurs to me that anyone who saw the plane do that 180° turn is now probably wondering if they saw a UFO. :lol:
