Threat to National Security

I’ve been listening to the current legal dramas regarding the foreign nationals detained without trial under the current anti-terrorism laws. I find the idea that we’ve kept some of these people under lock and key for up to 3 years somewhat puzzling. Not because of any namby-pamby liberal notion that we are somehow denying their human rights. They would be quite prepared to deny ours.

No, it’s more because of the fact that the last time I heard it cost something between £40,000 and £50,000 per annum to keep someone locked up. That’s a lot of money. I wish I had that amount for myself. Now it may be a drop in the ocean as far as overall government spending is concerned but, in my view, it is representative of the massive waste of money that bureaucracy seems to like.

My thought is – “why are they still in this country at all?”. For £50,000 they could all be put on a plane, with escorts to ensure they arrived where they were meant to, probably first class too and sent back to where they came from. Why should the average tax payer shell out hard-earned money to look after these cretins?

Send the buggers home and have done with it!!
