The Last Few Days

Apart from my tweaking spree the world has seen a few major changes over the last few days. One of the first things to hit me was the death of John Peel. I’ve been listening to this guy for as long as I can remember and was still listening to his programmes on BBC Radio 4 and The World Service right up until his death. It came as a complete out-of-the-blue shock to me as it wasn’t as if he had been ill or anything. He will be sorely missed.

The USA decided to re-elect G.W. We shall see what repercussions come from that decision over the next 4 years.

Yasir Arafat was taken ill and died on Thursday after having fallen into a coma.

Thursday was Remembrance day and we should remember with pride and honour all those who have fallen in conflict in defence of their country and freedom, not least those members of The Black Watch who have died recently.

All these individual events seemed to somehow connect up as this last week progressed. It is coincidental that Yasir Arafat happened to die on Remembrance Day. It is also coincidental that he and John Peel were both buried on Friday despite having died some days apart. (I understand why this was the case so no need to comment on it.) Both funerals were attended in great numbers showing the wide popularity of both men. Assistant Secretary of State William Burns represented the United States at Arafat’s funeral, an official below the many European foreign ministers, African presidents and Arab leaders attending, and a choice that drew criticism that Washington was missing a chance for a fresh start with the Palestinians. The funeral was held in Cairo.

Arafat wanted to be buried in Jerusalem but surprisingly the Israelis won’t allow it. I wonder what they would have done if he had recovered from his illness and wanted to return to the Muqata compound in the West Bank town of Ram Allah where he had been a virtual prisoner for the last 3 years. I know what they said before he left but I wouldn’t trust them an inch. In the event this is where he has been buried temporarily until such time as his remains can be moved to Jerusalem. Meanwhile, amid fears that Arafat’s death could trigger an outbreak of violence, the Israeli occupation army imposed a total security clampdown on the West Bank. Israel announced that the army would prevent private cars travelling from Jerusalem to Ram Allah and instead would allow only public buses. Forces would be deployed within Jerusalem city and on the roads leading from Ram Allah to Jerusalem. And let us not forget that there has been no explanation whatsoever for Arafat’s illness nor for his sudden decline into a coma. I do know that France has very strict laws relating to the release of medical information but at the end of the day this was a very important man and Palestinians have a right to know what happened to their leader in the last days of his life. Had it been G.W. lying in that hospital there would have been detailed hourly bulletins to the world. Does seem odd somehow.

While all this was going on Tweedledum and Tweedledee had a tea-party and then said a lot of things during their well-orchestrated press conference on Friday. It would seem to me that G.W. could really get down to doing a few things that need doing in his second term instead of having to pander to the popular vote as he isn’t going to get a third term. Palestine/Israel would be one. As the question was raised at the press conference he made a good start by actually saying that there should be two independent states living side-by-side, something that doesn’t get voiced very often in the US particularly at presidential level. Nice one G.W. As I said he doesn’t have to think about the Jewish vote next time round cuz there isn’t a next time. Mind you, if I were Jewish living outside Israel, I think I would be ashamed to be associated in any way whatsoever with the State. But I’m not. As it is I’m just ashamed to be living on the same planet with it. Several Israeli newspapers carried a full-page advertisement stating “Arafat is dead. Thank God”. I believe such an ad would be illegal in Britain and probably wouldn’t get accepted anyway but of course we are talking about Israel so different moral and legal standards obviously apply. Other than G.W.’s statement both he and Blare waffled on about the subject for a while but when analysed I couldn’t find much of any real substance in what they said. No change there then. Only time will tell on that one.

Yes, I see lots of tweaking” here…. I like the new logo—I wonder if George Bush would concider that logo more offensive against US intrest over the lst one you had. Just an evil thought I had.

Yes, the world stage is very interesting right now. With the election over in the US, we are still adding up what the cost could be here. One note that I read in the paper that Gold is at a 15 year high. Although the price inwhich I can buy it at is still the same as it was 6 months ago: $524.00 per oz, the price really has gone up. You see, the Canadain Dollar is increasing at a very high rate while the US Dollar is dropping. We are 86% the value to the US doolar right now, yet, last year this time, we were only 71%. The reason is, the US has got a huge deficit: close to 3 trillion dollars. So buying US gold right now could be a real bargain in the next 3 months. :)

So, the US dollar might not do well, and might spell trouble for the US econemy. Hard to say what that will do for the world OIL prices ($55.00 a barrel US). Where I live, we are having a gas wars, prices at the pump are like what they were 18 months ago @ $0.72 per letre. Go figure?

I like your evil thoughts Tom. Maybe I should email it to him. Of course I should also have to point out to him that it was created for me by an American citizen (link in my footer).

The low dollar is causing some headaches for the Euro. Doesn’t bother us much in the UK though. Makes Disneyland a more attractive proposition if you have several kids to satisfy. Or none if it comes to it. Why should kids have all the fun?

People at the top have suddenly realised that our North Sea gas is running out and this will only add to out increasing import/export deficit. Of course it’s been known for some time that it will run out but no-one ever takes a blind bit of notice if it’s not something that affects the here and now. Ha ha. Stuff em eh? (I wonder if anyone has mentioned the oil situation to them )

Hey, be sure not to get The Secret Service involved or anything. :P

Both the re-election of GwB and the death of Arafat are in the Netherlands less of an impact than the murder of Van Gogh and the outburst of extremist violence after that. Seems that fear and anger did rise up, which led to attacks on different kinds of schools and religious buildings.

One minister said the country is at war now against terrorism, i am waiting for the words ‘if you’re not with us, you’re against us’.

Still, i am glad i am living in Belgium these days, but there is a saying here that when it rains in The Netherlands, it is dripping in Belgium. Seems we are looking at grimm times to come.
13 November 2004, 20:23
You’re not supposed to talk about them Jess. They are meant to be a secret. Sshhh.
13 November 2004, 20:25
Yes wchulseiee, major events near to home tend to take precedence over world events. I was somewhat taken aback by the events in The Netherlands. Just never seemed like that kind of country to me. Not that I’ve been there other than for a change of plane at Skipol (which means that officially I haven’t been there at all). Just an impression I got from TV, what I’ve read and Dutch people I know.

Old George W. Bush probebly has a link to your page anyway…. ha ha ha ha….

Yes, the Euro must be just kicking the US economy in the butt right now. A freind of mine from “Uni” who has a brother in the States says that the Euro is just killing him. He is stationed in Germany in one of the US army bases there. Of course, going out for few beers hurts the old pocket book now that the US dollar is diving. Gone are care free days of living high on the hog while the locals watch in dismay. I can see the US shipping in their own cheep beer to keep the troops happy… he heeee.

crap, can’t seem to spell today

Whoa! It looks great!!! Hey, email me. I have an entire collection of bombs that I obtained when I was working on this site:

Email me and you can have them for future tweaking fun!

It looks great! {{Sits down on new furniture and kicks off shoes.}}

I’ve seen Israel as a rogue state for a long time now. They do what they want and don’t care too much shit for what others might think. I hope America doesn’t adopt that path.

Nice header btw.
14 November 2004, 09:29
Matthew – I shan’t argue with that.

Joni – Glad you like it. Thanks for the email. I’ll go have a look in a bit. That site you mention looks cool. New furniture eh? Christmas comes early to the Mueller household.

One of the most ineresting effects of the US election that I’ve heard of is a 6 fold increase in the number of Americans looking at the Canadian immigration website.

This, of course, spawned www.marryanamerican.ca where open minded and generous single Canaidans can open their hearts to liberal American “refugees” fleeing more of GW’s extreme conservatism.

Maybe this will finally help reduce the brain drain…
14 November 2004, 21:07
Maybe you will get an influx of knitters Lizz. Any news on your site yet?
14 November 2004, 21:26
Ya, I heard that to on CBC Radio One. I thought that was cute. One of my profs currently was a draft doger from the 1960s. I would love to hear what he has to say about that! Its sad realy.

Conscription sure adds to the definition of a free and democratic state, now doesn’t it?

HUmmmmmmmmmm…. However, this might increase the Brain Drain Lizz. Now people will need to fill all those openings down there…..
14 November 2004, 21:31
Thanks Stu for the Spelling tip using Fire Fox. I’ll give a shot latter on this week when I get more tame…... er , I mean Time…....He he ha ha ha ha ;-)
15 November 2004, 00:03
I don’t need any knitters, I have my Dave, and that’s all I need =-)

Thomassso, if we get enough people moving here, we can cripple the American economy, and then there won’t be anywhere for the brains TO drain!!! =-)

Hey – a girl can wish, can’t she?
16 November 2004, 23:52
Aaahhhh! Ain’t love nice.
17 November 2004, 15:49
Well Lizz, as long as the quality of those brains that are coming up here are exceptional, I don’t have a problem with that. You wouldn’t catch me heading down there though: been there, done that! The web link you posted here was cute. I took it work, (I work for an American Company) and showed them: would you believe that they thought that was a “fabulous” idea? That scared me…...

Stuart: Knitters??????
17 November 2004, 20:37
Yes Tom – knitters! Is it me or has your spelling suddenly improved?
17 November 2004, 20:43
Tom, I knit =-) thus Stu is teasing (?) me about it… I have to get my act together and put up some piccies… not that I have very many right now… I’ll get to it, I’m sure… One day
17 November 2004, 22:24
Stu———> The Spellbinder program works like a charm with fire fox. Actually, I was posting to some newsgroups yesterday (using PAM as a poster) and found that unbeknown to me, the spellbinder works there too!!!! I had the famous red squiggly lines to boot!

Lizz——-> I thought knitters was some British Slang that had some way different meaning and required some translation to interpret into Western English. For Example: Men don’t wear knickers? I didn’t what they were….???? But now I do :)
18 November 2004, 01:44
I’ve personally found that Stu only rarely uses British words that I’m not used to… perhaps because my Grandma was British, so my mum has some Britishisms… (like Mum instead of Mom… eewwwwwwwww “mom”)... But it also prevented me from picking up good solid Canadianisms, like chesterfield…

You win some, you lose some…
18 November 2004, 02:21
Now to me a chesterfield is either a rifle, a cigarette or a particular shaped sofa. Quite often leather but not necessarily. So what is it to you?
18 November 2004, 07:25
We truly are separated by a common language… or whatever that saying is. :P
18 November 2004, 16:51
A chesterfield is another word for couch or sofa… Just not one that I’ve ever been raised with…

I guess I have to get me one of those cool gravatars, don’t I???? and I even know waht to use =-)

Hehehehe…
18 November 2004, 20:32
Strictly speaking it is a particular design of sofa. The arms and the back are of the same height and are vertical. As I mentioned earlier they are normally leather and deep-buttoned but I’m not sure if this is a specific requirement.

Now have I made a mistake enabling Gravatars??
