Reason - Excuse - Doh!

I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to my language. English that is. I know you Americans out there love to spell things differently and even pronounce words differently when you’ve spelled them correctly in the first place and we just love you for it. But that’s in America, not here in England. When something like that happens here I get a bit annoyed.

It would seem that the word reason now means excuse here! Hang on! Nobody told me about this. How can one word suddenly be transposed to another?

This is a phenomenon that has occurred in the last couple of weeks or so. Basically since the London bombings. People have been trying to explain why these young Asian lads have been turning to suicide bombings to try and solve their problems. They must have reasons for it. But suddenly the government have started slamming people who try to explain the reasons as excusing the bombings. If you give them a reason you are excusing them.

Well I’m sorry but that argument is just plain stupid. Nobody is excusing these people. What they are trying to do is find out why they do it. Their reasons. This is not the same thing. The two words are not interchangeable. They have different meanings.

Of course the government’s problem is that the most recent reason for this type of terrorism is the invasion of Iraq which they not only supported but also took part in by sending our own troops. They had their reasons but I’m not going into them here in case I end up excusing them.

Now when someone suggests that this is a reason for the London bombings the immediate response is that Iraq hadn’t been invaded when 9/11 occurred. Don’t politicians have short memories when they are losing an argument? I seem to recall that, along with the Americans, we went marching into Kuwait to repel Saddam’s invasion of that country. Hence 9/11. Not an excuse. A reason.

Then they come up with all the other bombings around the world that were happening before that. Well all I can say is that we’ve been boiling the pot since 1947 when we stood by and let Zealot terrorists murder and rape innocent Palestinian men, women and children to establish the State of Israel which was recognised, oh a least a day later, by America, promptly followed by most western, white, non-Muslim countries. And we’ve ignored the plight of the Palestinians ever since.

Of course Palestinians have the wrong skin colour and the wrong religion so why should anyone give a shit? And when the Palestinians try to fight back in the only way they have open to them they are denigrated as terrorists. Well I give a shit! As far as I am concerned the only terrorists in Palestine call themselves Israelis and I hate the bastards. And I should make it clear here that I’m talking about Israelis. Not Jews. And mostly the right-wing, fascist Israeli government, not the average citizen. Fuck ‘em.

Some secrets were revealed this week under the 50 year rule that showed that we enabled the Israeli nuclear experiments by selling them 50 tons of heavy water. We kept it a secret from the Americans. (sshh don’t tell them) I have to say this just totally shames me and worries me. Not that we kept it a secret from America but that we initiated the Israeli nuclear presence. I feel that this was probably the biggest mistake we have made in a hundred years. We have helped to create the most dangerous country in the world.

I have so much to say on this, but it would be too long, this is my 9th draft. I think what you’ve said is pretty spot on. The government treats mental patients with the same disdain – screw treating em, just lock em up. There’s no justification for what’s happening, heck it could happen at any time I’m on a train or ride a bus in to Central – I know a lot of my friends are too scared to get on the transport.

Is it so difficult to look at the reason, the roots of the problem and then find a solution? Reason as you say is to state a cause for an event – no the purpose, not the desire, nor the justification but the “WHY?” of the actions. As a non-muslim, but as an Asian, I see how those who do follow religion (and even those that don’t) can be easily coached into believing that killing “the white devil” (as they’re probably told) is taking the equivalent of ten of their muslim lives – or something stupid like. They see Asians, muslims being killed either by their own, or by the “white occupiers” in their land.

I think everyone’s forgotten about Cuba, and the bullshit that happened there, about Afghanisatn and how it was once a prosperous beautfil country destroyed by war, Iraq was created by Britain and put into power of men of their choosing. Israel and Palestine – no you can’t justify killing or sucide bombing of the innocent, but how long do they fight with sticks and stones as tanks roll over their homes?

If these countries spent as much time invading others as they spent helping countries come to peace, then we might live in a better world, noa perfect one but a better one. Iraq is going to destory itself, forget the oil, that’s already owned by the West as payment for “freeing” Iraq, but once their’s a civil war, and theirs nothing left to own in Iraq do you think any of the Western countries will help? Will they nuts, there’s nothing in it for them. Another country destoryed while the West gets richer?

These psyhopreachers have so much ammunition to persuade kids to go bombing for them – as a message to stop killing their kin. It’s not right, but then is anything happening right now in these countries right in anyway? Walk in, take what you like then leave and let them sort their mess out? Israel has a free ticket to ddo as they please – I know a few British Jews who see things on both sides, some are angry at Palestenians, others sympathise and feel their pain. How can people who have survived a World War, humiliation and extermination by facist bastards repeat those same acts against another race/people? Surely they understand the pain they’re causing just as they suffered before? Will their a memorial for all the Palestenians remebered by the West? Probably not – I don’t think peasent countries have much to offer, look at the great strides we’re making in Africa…

I feel starting again it just doesn’t sound right. I hate politics sometimes.

You would think the Israelis would care but I don’t think they do. The government that is. They keep reminding us to remember what happened in WWII but I think they have forgotten themselves. The Gazza Strip is the most densely populated piece of real-estate in the world. Kind of reminds me of a concentration camp somehow.

I know, that’s what I see. Okay they’re not creating concentration camps and systematically wiping people out – but it’s the next “best” thing to that. Occupy a country, stay there, get you rpeople to build houses there, knock down the country’s own places of worship, build on top of those, knock down the shanty towns and settlements and then wonder why they’re angry. Just another day at the office?

But then multiply that by all the other countries currently being attacked. Whent he shit hits the fan we won’t be around. There was no Al Qaeda before Iraq in Iraq, they certainly found a way in thanks to the War. Rather ironic.

I hate war, whatever the reason, I hate people dying whatever the reason. I have friends in the arm y and the navy who tell me I don’t understand what it’s like when they’re out there. But then that is true, I don’t because I won’t follow the commands of idiots to go around invading another country for the sake failed intelligence. To quote Megadeth, “Milttary Intelligence – two words combined that can’t make sense”.

I support the soldiers, the people out there trying to survive, but I don’t support what they’re doing because they’re simply pawns on a bigger chess board run by Blair and Bush. This whole damn thing is a tragedy and to say that Iraq has nothing to do with this is both an insult to those that died on the 7th of July and also to those dying and being kileld by suicide bombers in Iraq. I would ask Blair where the sucide bombers were in Iraq before the invasion – I expect it had something to do with the gravataional pull of the moon and his arse.

Logic says: invade country + occupation by force = angry civilians

Perhaps if we follow this religion we’ll all live peacefully?

Another case where reason and excuse get confused :-

A lot of people seem to think that religion is the reason behind a lot of these wars, when in fact it is just an excuse. Religion doesn’t cause wars, people do.

On a slightly more tongue in cheek note – everyone should be a pagan, then it’d be all peace and love. ;)

Nice post. :)

Religion is never a good excuse nor a reason. As you say, people cause wars not religion. The problem in this case is not the religion, but the people who are teaching it and twisting it to suit their own ends.

Pagans of the world unite!

Paganism has to be on to something – after all why would the Christianity take a pagan holiday and call it the birth of Christ, and Harrods have a “sale” for that special day?

All one need do is visit the official Church of Satan (http://churchofsatan.com) and read their 11 Satanic Rules of the Earth and see one which EVERYONE would do well to follow: “Bother no one.” (And of course, along the lines of Stuart’s post, most people do not bother to make the distinction between a “Satanist” and a “devil worshipper,” but they ought to.)

And THANK YOU for daring to say what a lot of Americans won’t: It IS about the oil. Always has been, always will be.

Hi Joni. We’ve always been happy to say what we really feel here but my Animal Farm post suggests that this might be in jeopardy in the future. :(
