One Campaign Ads Banned!

Whilst England basks in the euphoria of winning The Ashes, OffCom, the national body responsible for regulating British broadcasting, have quietly announced that the adverts for The One Campaign have been banned. Why? Because it’s a political campaign of course, why else?

Now I don’t blame OffCom for this. They have laws and regulations that have to be adhered to. I do suspect though that the Government is very happy with this outcome. It should relieve the pressure on them to get something done about the poverty-stricken areas of the World and allow them to back-slide from the policies announced at the G8 summit.

The One Campaign is political in the sense that their aims require that governments around the planet change their attitude and policies towards world-wide poverty however, The One Campaign is not a political body/party in the sense that their goals concern charity, sympathy and the recognition that this is everybody’s problem and not restricted just to those countries affected by poverty.

I think this is a classic case where the old phrase the law is an ass comes into it’s own. I believe that the UK Government should intervene and tell OffCom to just let this one go.

How did the One campaign violate regulations in OffCom’s view? Is OffCom your version of America’s FCC?

Perhaps they need a tribute similar to this one

I’m not too familiar with the FCC but in the UK OffCom regulate all broadcasting which includes both TV and radio and according to their regulations The One Campaign has “political aims” which contravenes the rules for advertising apparently. What can I say? It’s good for us as we don’t get bombarded with political ads all the time but on the other hand…

FCC = Federal Communications Commission. It appears the same, though the FCC doesn’t appear to pander to the politicos so much. They do, however, get all bothered about things like Janet Jackson’s notorious nipple slippage.

Well I don’t think they are pandering so much as applying the rules too strictly. I think that happens to suit the politicos over here though so I can’t see them changing anything too soon.
