Normal Service Soon

I wonder how many of my Magic Visitors have spotted that “there is a problem Houston”. Seems that the whole of my site is working properly (as far as I can tell) except for the front page! Typical! Put up my new design and get problems with the software. Good timing methinks.

It would appear that the latest revision has a little bug in it which I have reported. I’ve even tested a couple of things that they asked me to so I’m being as helpful as I can. Of course this is one of the downsides to Beta testing but heck it was my choice wasn’t it? I did consider reverting to an earlier revision but I thought that was sort of defeating the object so, along with you good little trainee wizards, I’m going to stick it out till the fix arrives. In the mean time I am going to mess so don’t be worried if you see blank screens at any point. Try again 5 minutes later. You have to assume that if I’ve buggered it up I should be able to unbugger it. Hold that thought. I like it.

So for those of you who haven’t spotted it yet it would appear that the “if….else” conditional isn’t performing as expected. Without getting technical this little bit of code decides whether I am using an excerpt or full post. Thing is it isn’t getting to the full post bit which means that only posts that use an excerpt are appearing on the page. Now that I’ve done this post there are no examples on page 1 but if you pop down to the navigation at the bottom of the page (that’s the front page, not this one) and go to page 8 you will see what I mean. Just titles and no posts. Cool eh. They haven’t disappeared of course, if you click on the title it will bring you to this page and you can read the full post.

I used to use a plug-in for this which in my opinion did a better, more controllable job in this respect but if you remember my post regarding upgrading to RC3 you will recall that I had a problem with the “Read More” link which wasn’t being formed properly. There’s been some discussion about it on the Forum and suggestions for correcting the link so I’m going to have a go at it. Tingley tingley. White space here we come!!

Edit

Well a quick 5 minutes messing about tells me that the plug-in I mentioned doesn’t work at all now so that was a crap idea. Tut tut. Looks like twiddling my tingling fingertips a while longer.

Edit 2

I’ve gone backwards through my posts and added excerpts to those that don’t have them. I haven’t done everything but the first 7 pages should look fine. If someone is looking at something older than that (October) they are probably using the archives or search so they will get to see the full post anyway (they use a different page). No more messing. I shall wait.

Of course I couldn’t report anything about your frontpage, since the first page I visit is always the guestblock, from which I switch to either your blog or your forum. And I didn’t find anything wrong about it (except for being blacklisted yesterday).

You’ll have to go to page 8 to see it now. I’ve been fixing.

My blog is the front page. I call the other one my Home page.

Well, anyway, I didn’t notice anything wrong with the site.

:)

And I can’t find anything that’s stopping you coming here. Nothing in the DB, nothing in htaccess. I’m out of ideas.

I’m having trouble loading your live bookmark… could this be related??

There you go Lizz. Takes a woman to ferret out those deliberate mistakes. I made the design so simple I haven’t put the feeds in. Ha ha ha ha. They will be found in the footer anytime now. I do know that they have been messing with the feeds code lately so old links might be busted. And you still haven’t said if you like it or not. Tut tut. How’s a man to know if he’s on the right track if he doesn’t have women advising him every single solitary step of the way. I’ll be back.

See! I just knew they wouldn’t work. I’ll go checksy.

It may not be doing what it is supposed to Stuart, but it actually looks quite good :)

One day you will have to explain to me why you stopped using WordPress and opted for TextPattern.

Either way, and even though I have not been a frequent visitor of late [please forgive me:)] I still like your site very much.

Well obviously we have problems at TXP just as you do at WP. Don’t forget we are not even at version 1.0 yet but at TXP we discuss problems and fix them. I’ll say no more on that subject. I’m working on a couple of smaller, unrelated articles at the moment, but with the return of Root and the prospect of a new template theme base to run on Strayhorn I’m going to start my contribution to the project by writing a piece on what the ultimate set of templates should consist of and how they will work together. Within this you will find one of the main reasons I prefer TXP. I shan’t gloss over it here. It’s a tad technical and needs explanation. Thanks for stopping by. Make it more regular. You may find one of these new articles I’m working on of interest.
