I'm Winning!
I don’t know if my post relating to ID cards had anything to do with it, particularly as it appeared in The Guardian, but the House of Lords yesterday rejected the government’s plans to introduce “voluntary” id cards by compulsion when applying for a new or renewed passport. Yippee!
Of course the government, being the bunch of egotistical control-freaks that it is, has now said that, if necessary, it will force the legislation through with the Parliament Act. There’s democracy at work for you.
And for my next campaign I turn to America and all the poor, unfortunate women that have to live there. (Have you ever thought of moving?)
A law has been passed in South Dakota making it a felony for doctors to perform any abortion except to save the life of a pregnant woman.
My first thought is that this would have been passed by MEN.
My second thought is that these same people would like to ban ALL forms of contraception as they believe that sex is something that should only be performed for the express intention of producing children and not something that is a natural part of a loving relationship.
My third thought is that these men are probably so butt-ugly that they haven’t been able to get sex for years.
My fourth thought is that the wives of these men are probably so butt-ugly that their husbands wouldn’t want sex with them even if it were freely offered.
I think it is time that all you American women stood up and got counted because you don’t seem to mean too much to the male population of the country.

Take heart. There aren’t that many folks living in South Dakota.
Seriously, though, I agree with you that the legislation is not only wrong but also ignorant and selfish (though I don’t agree with your blanket condemnation of American men as a whole).
Sorry wj. I wasn’t really condemning American men as a whole, more the male politicians who, for some reason just lately, seem to have turned into right-wing Christian biggots. :(
I suspect they are all living a lie. I’m not sure that being a Christian AND right-wing sits well together.
Normally, when I talk about America, it is from a political point-of-view. If ever I were to talk about the citizens I would make sure that the reader knew that. :)
And whilst South Dakota may not be too populous I think this is going to affect the wider country, plus we have people over here talking in the same way already. Sheeesh!
Yep. Actually most States’ legislatures over here have considered (or are considering) similar laws. I’m distraught over the extreme position of our current administration and its partisans, as well. I’d be equally unhappy if the opposite extreme held almost absolute power, as well.
Somewhere there’s a balance of ideology that fosters thoughtful and intelligent leadership. One would hope, at least.
This law has been in effect in Ireland for quite some years. According to this link a modification was made in the 1990s to also cover women who were threatening to commit suicide. Draconian is definately the word to describe this legislation.
Just my $0.02 worth (I prefer to use propper currency LOL)
Thanks for that Scouser. :)
I think there has to be some middle ground somewhere. I have no problem with the idea of abortion though I think that the current time limit is too high. I believe that it is 24 weeks at present, though there are plans afoot to drop that to 20 weeks.
What bothers me with the current ban introduced in South Dakota is that it takes no account of women who have been made pregnant by rape. These women will now be forced to have a baby they never wanted or planned for by a father they probably have never met properly. There would, I think, be a strong possibility that the woman would not “bond” with the child and the child would be a constant reminder of the rape. To me that sounds very much like state-sponsored mental cruelty.
I agree with the timing thing but state-sponsored mental cruelty, never looked at it that way.
I suppose in cases like that, the response from TPTB would be something like “Put the child up for Adoption”. Not the kind of thing any mother would want to do (especially with the current state of social services. I know ours are bad but I believe that American social services are equally poor).
I can’t see any reason why a woman would want to keep the baby of a rapist (but hey, it’s an excellent source of DNA to gain a conviction).
The main problem with refusing women the right to legal abortions is that if they are desperate, they are likely to find a place that is willing to give illegal abortions. These abortions are much less likely to be clean, and are more likely to lead to infection and serious injury to the woman.
Abortions, if done wrong, can lead to sterility, which is very rarely what the woman ACTUALLY wants.
The other option would, of course for these women to simply go out of state. It’s more of a hassel, but at least you retain the choice over your own body.
My main question for this is: how can this be passed??? Isn’t the right to abortions in the US sorta strong due the that little case called Roe vs Wade?
I am sooo happy i live in germany – a country where abortion is legal and not under discussion. The ‘american way’ is short sighted, cruel, surpressing… etc…
Beeing f. e. raped and forced to get the baby is disgusting! I am happy i live in germany because the majority here thinks this way.
We seem to treat women better than americans do.
