Gravatars

I’ve implemented a hack which I learned about at Matthew’s The Watchmaker Project. To learn what it is all about you will need to go to the comments.

Comments ( 26 )

So here it is then. My favourite avatar or in this case Gravatar. It will appear next to all of my comments provided I remember to put in the correct email address. Anyway, if you would like to do the same the first thing you need to do is to set-up your own Gravatar. Make sure that you use the email address that you will use in blog comments. The Gravatar site will set your avatar at 80×80 so ensure that it is square or it will be distorted. On my site it will be reduced to 50×50 which is the size you can see here. Once you have set-up your Gravatar you will be able to use it on any enabled site simply by using the appropriate email address. If you want to set the facility up for your own blog read through the instructions on the Gravatar site. Some blog applications such as WP and MT have plug-ins and others such as TXP require hacks. It’s fairly simple but I’m open to questions.

Neat. Mine’s pending approval of the gravatar judges.

Cool, I have added my gravatar and await immortality.
18 November 2004, 04:00
Nicely done, Stuart. You might want to float: left; the gravatar images to get them to line up with the text a bit better.

I wonder if my gravatar has a transparent background or not..?
18 November 2004, 06:49
Aahhh. Don’t they look cute. I don’t think I’ll worry too much about smilies – it will look too busy.

Jess – I always preferred that one to your cartoon. Didn’t like to say.

Matthew H – us immortals have to stick together.

Matthew P – I’m afraid you have a white background. You can see it if you change style to Royal Lizz. I have floated but I was in a rush to get to bed so I shall do some tweaking later. I need to implement your bit of PHP too to stop the small indent for people that don’t have one.

Bummer, I can’t see them. There’s just a box that says “Commenter’s gravatar” where the pictures should be. I don’t know if that’s a problem on my end (there are MANY of those) or what.

Stuart – I feel a bit strange using a pic of myself, so that’s why I use the cartoon version elsewhere. :P The good news is I’m rated G.
18 November 2004, 13:06
Nevermind… I see them now. Spiffy!
18 November 2004, 15:38
I’m rated “G” as well. Kind of hoped I’d be “XXX” or something a bit more interesting.
18 November 2004, 16:01
Heh. Do they incorporate the ratings into the code somehow? For instance, can you control which ratings your site allows?

Just wondering for what use the rating is.

Erg, I’m itching to change mine already. laughs
18 November 2004, 16:27
Now you leave it alone! Yes you can use the ratings in the tag to allow or disallow. When I say tag I’m talking TXP speak but I believe the facility exists for everyone.
18 November 2004, 16:42
Stuart – No worries, I haven’t installed any graphics software yet. The current gravatar is safe (for the moment anyway). :P
18 November 2004, 16:47
Good. You could always set-up a second one with a different email address to use elsewhere.
18 November 2004, 16:53
I could but that would just be greedy. :P
18 November 2004, 17:02
Ok, so mine’s pending, I hope you all like it… and no, it’s not the dancing frog. =-)
18 November 2004, 20:45
Thank God for that!!
18 November 2004, 20:50
Hey, be nice Sir… that frog is CUTE… though I’m not sure you’ll like the image I’ve chosen… tough, it’s for me, not you.
18 November 2004, 21:00
Yes Lizz. I agree the frog is cute. One at a time. A page full is quite another thing though. Sends you cross-eyed.
18 November 2004, 21:06
Hmm… perhaps we should all have dancing frog gravatars! evil grin
18 November 2004, 21:08
yeah yeah yeah… But I have a question: where can I see how many posts I’ve made on this site??? clearly fewer than 61, but… how much spam do I need to spew before I’m on that list??
18 November 2004, 21:08
Jess, have you seen my dancing frog?? (I guess most places have the same one…)... if I could make it my background without using too much CPU, I think I would… but I’m sure it would use way to much CPU…
18 November 2004, 21:10
Just for you Lizz. Haven’t you been rated yet?
18 November 2004, 21:16
Lizz ~ I don’t believe I’ve seen it. :feels deprived: ;)
18 November 2004, 21:18
Hey Stu, I’m going to be the rebel and sustain from the Gravatar wave for the time being. I’m feeling a little egocentradic right at the moment. grin
18 November 2004, 21:51
wahoo!!!! i have my cute little turtle now!!! and I didn’t realize I’d switched names at some point in time… odd….
18 November 2004, 21:59
No problem Tom. Anytime you’re ready.
Lizz has now moved up the charts. Aren’t I clever?
18 November 2004, 23:11
Thanks Sir, you’re marvellous I tell you!!
