Google and MyDoom

It seems that yesterday the latest variant of the MyDoom worm hit Google hard, particularly in the UK. I quote:-

“It seems like the latest MyDoom worm variant has caused a bit of an Internet storm. Google, at this time (12:28 EDT), is returning 503 errors on all queries submitted from certain locations. The MyDoom variant searches the user’s address book for email domains (i.e. @yahoo.com) and searches various engines (such as Google) for email addresses in that domain.”

If you want to know all the gorey details check out the Internet Storm Centre. I should warn you that this is a very technical article.

Holy crap, this virus, worm, what-ever-its-called is sure pissing alot people off over. My sister just told me that her server all most stopped last Wed. becuase of so many people getting the Email virus, MY-DOOM. She said that she was getting Email addresses from people she never heard from before who had Emails she sent less than half a day before... At one point, she received 7 Emails with atachments with all most 1MB worth of text. And yes, she does have IE. Here Virus detector said that she has the MY-DOOM virus on it. And the My-DOOM cleaner was not working.

She hates me becuase I don't have it..... Awh, Linux....

I think it's more to do with not being protected properly rather than just a Windows or IE thing. She should have, without fail, a firewall (NOT THE WINDOWS XP ONE. IT'S CRAP) or router and an anti-virus package. There are a few links in the article I linked to for anti-virus. I've updated the link as the article has been archived. I can recommend Zone Alarm for a free firewall. I'm not keen on free anti-virus software cuz it tends not to get updated regularly enough for my liking. Also you have to be careful which anti-virus you use, whether paid-for or not, cuz when it comes to email they may not cover the email client you are using. You need to check that side out a bit. Of course you could just suggest she reads my security stuff in the main site.

There are just too many people who would rather press a botton, incert a disk or download a fix-my-problem file rather then change their habits and software. My sister paid alot money for her unit and software and she figures that it is the vender who should shell out the cost and time of fixing it. I told her, "don't hold your breath..."

Oh, my server is going through some upgrades for the weekend. If your wondering why my PHP is not working or the page loads slow, fear not.... Its the server. Should be back to nomal on Monday.
