Friday

Friday again! This week seems to have flashed by. Must be all this validating. Still, I’m nearly there. It’s seems fairly certain now that the recent photos of British troops mis-treating Iraqi prisoners are fakes though that doesn’t mean that mis-treatment hasn’t been happening. We know for sure that it has with the US troops though there are suggestions that it was carried out “under orders”. I think that a real problem here though is with the two newspapers involved. I’m all for freedom of the press, though I think they can be too intrusive at times, but I don’t think they should be free to endanger peoples lives. The publication of these photographs on both sides of the water will undoubtedly lead to the deaths of more UK and US troops regardless of whether the accusations are true or not and regardless of what punishments are handed out if they are. There is nothing the two newspapers can do to retract their publication and all they have proven is the press’ total lack of responsibility when it comes to making a quick buck.

Well put. I agree with that. Even making full allowance for the importance of a free press in a democratic society, what those guys in the media have done is unbelievable. What for me is the worst part, is that at least temporarily and at the critical time period, the photographs muted an effective and coordinated response at cabinet level to the serious issues arising out of the US treatment of prisoners, not only in Iraq, but at their multiple facilities, outside the jurisdiction of all legal process. That can not be right.

I see the Mirror Board have sacked Piers now but of course it's a case of "too little too late". I really think he ought to be charged with something but I haven't thought what that should be yet. The same thing, in a way, is happening with that Carr woman. She had no part in the insane murder of those two girls and was actually away visiting when it happened, but because she lied on his behalf she will be forever tarred with HIS brush. To protect her life on release certain "arrangements" have been made but the press can't hack the idea that they can't report on what she's doing or where she's living. They really don't seem to grasp the idea that to publicise her whereabouts will put her life in danger. As far as they are concerned it is someone else who is threatening her, not them. Are they just totally thick or what?? :?: :?: :?:
