I enjoy working with HTML, XHTML, CSS and designers as a web developer. At home I enjoy listening to music, playing music, reading and food.

Colours

Well as much as I like "Rubric" I have to say I was getting a little jaded with the simple plainess of it, and it was getting a bit common, so I’ve been messing around with the colour scheme a bit the last couple of days. I combined my CSS sheets about a week ago or so (I had a separate CSS for the Blog and the site) which means I can do the whole thing in one go. I haven’t decided if that’s a benefit or not yet though I think it likely is. Anyway here it is in all it’s colourful glory. The main look is sorted (I think) but there may be one or two minor detail tweaks over the next few days. My next big decision is whether to take the "Rubric" reference out of the menu cuz it ain’t really "Rubric" anymore. Then again… Anyone has any viewing problems with it do let me know though if your using IE a good starting point would be to change to something better and more secure like FF , Mozilla Suite (my preference) or Opera (nice and small). If you’re a Mac type person you could also try Safari. Hey free advice. What more can you want?

Not sure about the gray text with the blue (perhaps a darker blue would suit - eek monochrome fiend strikes again). But overall I like it!

I know what you mean about the grey text but that's something I haven't messed with yet. That's how the text was before but on a white background so it looked different. I have a feeling that's something that will mess with the whole site so I will have to be careful what I do with it. And where's Lily? Haven't seen her since Friday. You'll have to persuade her to join the forum.
1 June 2004, 07:51
I think Lily's in the process of trying to finish her paper, poor thing.
1 June 2004, 14:51
Yes I'm glad I don't have to go through it. :naughty:
1 June 2004, 22:35
Agreed. Although I very much wouldn't mind having a Master's degree.
1 June 2004, 23:36
Stu: my two cents about the design credit. I guess all works to some extent evolve out of earlier pieces. What distinguishes us as designers is the bit we add. This is an interesting q. My take would be that the choice may be wider than: Credit on the menu Yes /No.
How about "Inspired by" in the CSS. Just a thought. Heck its your blog. And it is looking mighty pretty.
@Jess - I went to your blog and wanted to comment but I could not negotiate the labyrinthian registration. Prolly I am just too thick. :notworthy:
1 June 2004, 23:59
@Root - You don't have to register; you can comment anonymously (but leaving your name would be helpful, hehe).
2 June 2004, 00:20
@Root - Good idea. I'll work on that. If you want to comment on Jess' Blog check one of mine out. I haven't registered. I comment as "anonymous" then add an HTML tag for my signature. It works!
2 June 2004, 00:22
Thanks Jess. I wanted to ingratiate myself with you. Then I am going to ask you to do my header graphic  It is beautiful work. I will be over in a mo.
2 June 2004, 01:43
Woah! Cheek-of-the-devil. I was working round to that.
2 June 2004, 02:47
Alas, I'm in a dire state of last-minute moving hecticness (is that a word?) at the moment, so no graphics-making for me. I may even be offline for an indeterminate (THAT is a word, right? haha) amount of time. :wall: Perhaps when all is settled and I return to the online world I'll be able to oblige.
2 June 2004, 06:08
Does that mean you've actually settled on a move date? Well don't be away too long. I might have to sell binky baby!
2 June 2004, 07:00
It looks like the move is tomorrow. It's going to be determined by the availability of a truck whether the move is long distance or local. I was hoping to go back home to Pennsylvania, but that might not be what's in the cards for now. Don't sell the binky baby pleeeease - I love 'im.
2 June 2004, 09:09
You mean you don't know where you're going? What's the truck got to do with it? And if you're not going back to Penn. where the heck are you going? And yes I am nosey and that smiley is in the forum. As for binky I'll just have to keep feeding him I suppose.
2 June 2004, 09:51
Well, there've always been 2 options. Stay here in a new place or go home to PA and get a place there. We were supposed to have use of a truck from a friend for the long distance move, but that has not panned out. So if we can't rent a truck for long-distance then we're staying here for a while longer. ;) Please do feed the baby - I lurves him.
2 June 2004, 11:37
But you still have to move "within town" as it were? And what happens to the place in PA? Was it rented or hadn't you sorted a specific place? As for binky - don't forget he has a twin so that's 2 mouths to feed.
2 June 2004, 11:59
We hadn't rented anything in PA yet (and that seems a good thing now!) - we would have stayed with family until we found a suitable place. Maybe the twin binkie baby could be fed by osmosis? Hehehe.
2 June 2004, 23:17
Now don't get all technical on me. I thought that was something to do with potatoes!!
3 June 2004, 00:13
food + -> twin = fed by osmosis?
3 June 2004, 00:17
I'm sure we did that at school. It's now tea time so I'll make you jealous by announcing that I'm off to the Chinese for a takeaway.
3 June 2004, 00:35
Mmmm what's on the menu?
3 June 2004, 01:25
Singapore fried rice (spicy) with fried beef, spring onion and ginger. Yum Yum filling my tum.
3 June 2004, 01:59
Sounds delish.
3 June 2004, 02:10
It was. And it's all gone. Looks like cereal again for binky and stinky. Just so you know, Root has "comment moderation" enabled on his blog so you won't see your comments appear immediately. If he's in a good mood they'll appear a bit later. Of course if it's the middle of the night here they might not appear till you've gone to bed there, but that's time travel for you.
3 June 2004, 02:19
I thought maybe that was the case after I'd posted twice and nothing went through. Hehe. So do frequent posters go through mod as well? :?: Cereal's much better for the anyway. *nod*
3 June 2004, 02:52
Hmm the question mark smiley didn't work properly in that post. :?:
3 June 2004, 02:53
Yes everyone goes through it. It's just the way he prefers it setup. I don't use it but have a couple of blockers in to stop spamming plus one or two naughty words. This is a "Family Friendly" rated site and I want to try and keep it that way. I don't restrict subject matter at all but no bad swearing whilst you are talking about it. :) As for the question mark everyone has a problem with it cuz there's an error in the vars file. There's a space where there shouldn't be one so the software picks up the next best smilie which is "confused" because the code for that is 3 question marks with colons either side. I'll go see if I can fix it. If you find the site down you'll know why. ;)
3 June 2004, 03:22
All done. Just have to check backwards for errors now.
3 June 2004, 03:57
Well done on fixing the :?: smiley. :notworthy: So for future reference, is it possible to moderate someone's initial few posts and then give them permissions to post without moderation once their non-spamminess has been proven? If so, would that be done by IP?
3 June 2004, 07:27
Ah women are complex creatures but we wouldn't be without them. So how much time have you got? OK then. WP contains moderation in various formats. Three actually. The first one limits the number of "links" that can be in a comment. This is automatically set to 5 but I think it could probably be safely dropped to 3. This is to stop spammers. The second one uses a list of keywords which I can't mention else I'll get blocked but includes certain types of medication etc. This is also to stop spammers but you can also add swear words etc to the list. The third one is directly concerned with moderation which is what Root has enabled. The way he has it set is that he has to approve every comment before it gets posted. You are also able to put a complete ban on IPs and addys like a blacklist. Now there is a fourth one which I shall have to check but you can make everyone register first and then they get sent an email just like my forum. I've taken them out here as I don't use them but on some of the blogs you will see the "register" and "login" options in the menu. I know that registered users can be ranked from 1 to 10, 10 being yourself as admin and you can grant priviledges according to rank. Again a bit like the forum. What I need to check is whether you can say rank 1 needs moderating and rank 2 doesn't. I'll let you know on that but I have to say that I have had no problems just using the first two options yet, and using the registration option might put people off commenting. You know how easy people like things. I know Lily had a couple of spams recently but she hadn't activated the options when she upgraded. She's OK now.
3 June 2004, 08:15
Wow, thanks for the info! A simple yes or no or I don't know would have stifled my curiosity, for the record (so clearly I'm not *that* complex, haha). But I do appreciate the effort in spades.:clap::notworthy:
3 June 2004, 09:18
All women are complex Jess, it's just that their forms of complexity vary. This is why it's so hard being a man. :wall:
3 June 2004, 10:02
If you insist.
3 June 2004, 11:06
Oh I do. Of course men are just as complex really, we just like to pretend we're simple. Makes life a bit easier. Anyway back to reality. I've been checking on this registration idea and it doesn't help at all. Apart from the moderation as Root uses it or the controls I use the only requirements to post a comment are a name and email addy. A URL is a bonus. The registration thing as far as I can see is only useful if you want to keep a record of commentors, though registration is not compulsary so it would never be a complete record, or if you wanted to facilitate multiple bloggers in the same blog. This is not the same as multiple, separate blogs as we discussed before.

Now I know there is a "moderation" plugin so I'll go and find out what that does once i've checked to see if there's an answer to one of my proposals.
3 June 2004, 11:29
An answer to one of you proposals? I'm lost if that's referring to me specifically. Haha. :?:
3 June 2004, 12:09
Ha ha. No. I'm not sure that I've put any proposals to you yet, other than the blog. Of course I could be wrong. I've been asking some difficult questions over at WP.
3 June 2004, 12:30
Oh how presumptuous of me, hahaha!
3 June 2004, 12:32
Not at all. And I did say "yet". There is of course the small matter of about 5000 miles or so.
3 June 2004, 12:41
3 June 2004, 14:10
Ha ha. So you're still up then? Again.
3 June 2004, 14:58
Alas, yes. Dyl has been fighting a belly virus for a couple of days so it's making for an interesting (if not messy) night.
3 June 2004, 15:05
Oh dear. And I've got visitors tonight. My mate Kevin and missus so I have to get out and sort some birthday cards. My son Kevin (it's confusing isn't it?) came round yesterday and brought cards. I wasn't expecting him till the weekend so I hadn't got his. He's coming again on Friday so I must get it all sorted today. Sleep sounds attractive but it just ain't on!! And I'll have to go round with the vac and hide the ironing somewhere.
3 June 2004, 15:36
Hmmm. Seems most of the talk on comment moderation is about stopping comments once a post reaches a certain age which is of no real help to you. I think you're stuck with what we've got. Anyway with a few pointers from the forum and some inspired guesswork by myself I've been able to include a plugin inside another plugin. To what end I hear you ask. (Those pesky voices again) Well if you go to my blog stats in the menu you will find that I now have a word count for the comments as well as the posts and boy what a count. Combined total of 16,000 and rising.
3 June 2004, 16:07
Oooh company - exciting stuff, that. Sixteen thousand eh? We sure are a wordy lot, aren't we?
3 June 2004, 18:00
I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I've got the vacuuming sorted and hidden the ironing so it's out the door and get some shopping done. Don't you get company?
3 June 2004, 18:38
Not for me, no. Everyone I know & love (apart from the ones I live with) is down in PA.
3 June 2004, 19:30
Well you're one up on me then.
3 June 2004, 20:48
Oh, how so?
3 June 2004, 20:56
Visitors are great but once they've gone...... on me lonesome again.
3 June 2004, 20:58
Have you sorted that demon out yet? If you need some help it might be better if we "met" in the chatroom.
3 June 2004, 21:00
Re: #49 ~ I'm sorry to hear that.
Re: #50 ~ Oh it's going smashingly so far. I've gotten most of the blogs I read daily to work. Seems some don't have the option for syndication (or whatever the correct term is, hehe). But I do like it muchly. *nod* If only I could respond through it, haha! (You need a lazy smiley)
3 June 2004, 21:18
I have a "dozy" smilie (you may have met him in the forum) but I wanted to try and keep these all the same size. Dozy is actually taller because of the z's. Glad you like Demon. Are you aware that if you right-click on an RSS link and "copy link location" when you go through the entry process in Demon the URL will already be in there for you. Also you can click on comment or post titles in the bottom window and you will go straight to them. Those windows that tell you there is a new entry stay on top so if you are somewhere else you will still see them. I like it. Saves surfing around all night.
3 June 2004, 21:29
I did find out about the 'copy link location' thing quite by accident (happy accident, I must say!) because I was having trouble getting one of the comments rss feeds to work (I think it was Root's?). So I thought I'd try to copy link location and paste it in - turns out it was already done for me.
3 June 2004, 21:36
Well I only recommend the best.
4 June 2004, 05:15
Thank you much. :notworthy: Hehe.
