Bomb Site Banner

I’ve had this nice picture of a nuclear explosion for some time now. I thought it might be appropriate for a banner but I haven’t worked with it for a while. Anyway I’ve sorted something out and put up a test page for you to view. The colour scheme is by no means fixed. I’m just trying to bring colours out of the graphic to balance the page out a bit. All comments and suggestions welcome. I must say I like the site the way it is now so this project may go nowhere but the exercise will do me good.

Well, I just went and looked at the page and I must say, you have got a great looking page. It seems that you got way too much contrast in the graphic though: I see what you mean. It crys for more colours yet, your getting noise. I like the way you have the side boxes set up-- you like the thick borders and earthy colours eh? You have a good colour combo over all, and the layout is very easy on the eyes. Ya, it looks great on Mozzila anyway. Nice!

Actually Tom I'm not really into earthy colours. I just started with those. I'm picking colours out of the graphic with a colour-picker. You'll need to keep looking at it cuz it could change quite quickly. I've set up the CSS so I can edit it in WP which means I can change things on-line and see immediate results.

I see:shifty:... I'll look at it again. Oh, you'll need to see if those "NEW" flags are working at my little humble site . It doesn't seem to be updateing itself. It has stayed the same since I logged onto it today. It still keeps saying, 0..posts...2 news comments, since your last visit? Isn't supposed to "clear" itself everytime you log on? Hummmmmmmmm:think:

Actually Tom this has been talked about a lot on the WP forum for Alex's plugins. It has to do with the timeing contained in the cookie. I think the timing that comes as default is quite long which means you can come back to the site as often as you like if it's within the time setting and the flags won't change. Now I'm sure it tells you in the forum how to go about changing it but I have no experience with the things so I've just left mine as is.

Thanks Stuart. I have a funny feeling:think: that mine is set for "once a day" or somthing like that? I noticed on yours, that the flags are still there, but the comments and posts notice at the top of the page have re-set themselves. I'll leave mine and see what happens tonight. But I'm heading over to WP fourm right now to see what is going with the plug-in:hithead:. I did started playing around with cookie last night with one of the plug-ins that didn't work:hand:. I changed it back to what it was: maybe I killed it!:boohoo:

Stuart I like that nuclear bomb theme. I am the very last person to be advising on anything else to do with colour or style. I am firmly in the hit or miss school of design.

@Root - And me. I just like pulling the trigger a lot. :hithead:

@Tom - No way I'm messing with cookies. Maybe next year. :snooty:

Well, I'm glad to say:dance:, just like you said in the WP froum:notworthy:, the re-set for the flags is about 1 hour and a little short or the same for the "comments up-date:!:" I left to see how my truck is doing, well over an hour, and sure as heck, everything was back to zero!

Oh, and great tip about changing the URL destination so you don't need to put the plug-in in the main web page. Everything for the plug-in works, as far as I can tell. Thanks.

Good and smilies too!

Kewl!!! Much better than the current CSS-less design (?! I get to see a default stylesheetless page?!)
8 June 2004, 22:13
I thank you. You should visit more often. We like CSS here.

Hey Stuart,

What is the address for : phpbb2... that you gave me back on my BLOG? I looked through google and found 400 sites and pages... nothing in the form of "add-ons"????
9 June 2004, 08:03
@Tom - Go here.
9 June 2004, 10:10
OK then. All comments welcome. It's changed a lot since I started it so what's the current verdict? :help:
11 June 2004, 02:06
The banner looks nice
11 June 2004, 08:45
Thankyou.

There is always that thing with a full width screen and a fixed width graphic but it all looks cool to me.
12 June 2004, 01:35
@Root - Yes I know which is why I like what I have. Anyway of doing "stretchy" graphics? I might look at changing the bomb site text graphic instead and stick with the current layout. Of course I could always set up half-a-dozen CSS sheets to work with different resolutions.
12 June 2004, 01:58
I have been thinking about stretchy graphics myself. Method 1 a la Eric Meyer: Choose a grahic which looks fine as it gets chopped off on the right as the viewport begins to compress. Close up Architectural shots can be good. Important to keep the h1 on the left. My proposed method: Have two graphics. One is the background,
and the important bit you want folks to see goes on the right. Image 2 is the bit that is going on the left. Use float left. Now if the middle bit is suitably blurry, it can flex and you shouldnt see the join. Now where is Jess ? :shifty:
21 June 2004, 06:18
I did think along those lines but it doesn't give you much chance to have a nice dramatic shot like my mushroom cloud. I could just centre the graphic so it will be in the middle regardless of your resolution but that would give me a problem with the page titles eg ::home:: etc which are actually in the body. If I could find a way of postioning those relative to the graphic instead of the margin...... Course I could make the page titles part of the graphic but then I have to create a separate graphic for every page and there's a lot of them as you may have spotted and each page change would mean loading a new graphic which slows everything down. I'm kind of hoping that whilst she's off-line Jess (:notworthy:) may be working on my "The Bomb Site" text graphic. If she comes up with something cool I may just stick with the existing layout which is elastic anyway. Of course she may have other things to do. For the time being I'm using the test page to try out the odd thing like plugins. My latest addition is right below the comment entry box. And have you checked out my feed-reader page in the menu?
21 June 2004, 07:05
The weather I can do without but that feed reader is really cool. Why not write it up. I would have mine installed in a flash (if I knew how) :hithead:
22 June 2004, 20:28
Well it's not really mine to write up is it? The included instructions are pretty good else I would have got stuck myself. It does seem my idea of giving it it's own page is fairly unique so I can email my page code to you. Other than that just install as per instructions but NOT for WP.
