Billions

1,000,000,000,000. I was taught that this number is a billion. Twelve zeros. One million million. Now over in the good old US of A they have a habit of changing things. Over there a billion is three zeros short so it is only 0.1% of a true billion. This is, as you all know, a milliard (you didn’t know that at all did you really?). Now I’m not moaning about what happens over in America but I have noticed that the false billion has been creeping into everyday English life. It is creeping in through it’s constant use by politicians. Mainly New Labour politicians. It has been steadily increasing in usage since this current government lot came to power.

This is spin. You may not think it is but it is probably the oldest, most widely used bit of spin around. When these cretinous politicians who ought to know better (and do) talk about the billions of pounds they are about to spend on something vital they are cheating you. They are spinning a lie. In their own minds these politicians are safe in the knowledge that when they say billion they are not lying because they are using it in the American sense but they also know that you think it is a larger amount than they are actually talking about. There’s something a little Orwellian about that.

It doesn’t seem to have spread yet to politicians from other parties but if something isn’t done it soon will.

What is really annoying is that I have noticed lately that the BBC seem to have taken this false number on board so that now, when politicians are being interviewed, they don’t get quizzed about exactly what they mean by a billion. They used to be corrected or, at the very least, they would be asked how many millions they were talking about. This doesn’t happen any more and it is allowing this false use of a milliard to mean a billion to become accepted as the norm.

Except at The Bomb Site. I’m English. No don’t call me British and never even think that I might be European. I’m not. I’m English. Remember that. If I were Scottish or Irish you would call me so but because I’m English I get lumped in with all the dross and called British. I am not British. There is no such thing. I am English and I want my politicians, radio and TV companies to remember that and remember which country they are in and talk to me in English not American. AND STOP LYING.

It’s all about semantics Stu. I believe that the government should not be allowed to change the meanings of words nor invent new ones—Orson Wells 1984

Anyway, I have a huge problem over at my site: My data base is full???? It seems that I cannot gain access to my site regardless because the without it, the PHP will not work. I believes that is my be my server because I have all kinds of room there and my average hits per day have be-well-average. Any thoughts Stuart?

I’m at a loss with that one Tom. I can’t even get to your site to see what errors might be thrown up. I’ve never heard of a database being full except if it happens to fill your allowed site space. Have you checked with your host to see if they are having any problems?
9 April 2005, 17:13
OH yes! An they are not replying to my Emails. There office is closed on weekends but they are supposed to 7 day service with their techs. I’m sending them more Emails. I figure my MySQL is shut off for whatever reason? But I got no warning of any trouble through their news-wire….. gerrrrrrrrrr

Nice layout you have here. Are you going to add a side-bar?
9 April 2005, 20:32
Hope you get it sorted. No sidebar here Tom. The top menu does it all as they say. You do get the forum at the bottom of the front-page now. Don’t know if you spotted that little bit of magic. Not to mention my helpful Textile Formatting Tags just below you there. Now I’m working on two other poor souls’ sites. All good experience. By Christmas I shall be charging so get it whilst it’s free.

It’s not just America that uses 9 zeros (for the record) – I asked my friend from Holland how he writes one billion and it’s also nine zeros there. So you’re all just weird! ;)
9 April 2005, 21:28
Oh I know it’s not the only country Jess but it is where the 9 zeros version started back in 17something or other. The original 12 zero version, otherwise known as a billion, is in fact French from around 15 hundred and something and all of Europe and the English speaking world used it. It is only recently that the milliard has started creeping back. You might like to ask your Dutch friend how long it’s been 9 zeros there. It probably isn’t that long. Which is all beside the point because I’m talking about England and nobody here has made any official announcement about a change.

Stuart, I see your point regarding the top menu vrs the side bar: sure looks cleaner! It sure looks nice on FireFox. EI, the text seems to small, but that might be my settings? “A+” when veiwed on my LINUX machine… and loads very fast too! 0.24 secs.

Oh, I’m still waiting to hear back from my server: It’s only being 24 hours since I started complaining! It is 4:30pm in the afternoon my time right now so I figure I’ll hear back from them later tonight or somthing around 7:00pm. Gerrrrrrrrrrr =(

I remember my mum telling me about “English Billion” vs “”North American Billion”... In Canada we have always used 10^9 to mean billion… or at least as long as I can remember…

So, I have to ask… if 1012 is billion (our trillion)... is 1015 your trillion?? or is there a billiard in the middle of those two as well??
10 April 2005, 03:13
Opps, I didn’t notice that everything between circumflexes were raised…
10 April 2005, 03:14
so
we’re supposed to use the english billion too
i just don’t trust the media and the gov’t … meaning i’m not sure which one they’re using

grrr

I think your raised text looks lovely as do all your accents Lizz. The further you go up the numbers scale the worse it gets. To me a Trillion is 24 zeros, a billion billion, and so on. That’s what I was taught. Now your milliard is only 0.1% of my billion and I’m not going to work out what your trillion is but there’s about 9 zeros before the 1. I don’t know if it has a name but it is probably French so you ought to know.

Hi Lily. Where have you been? You ought to poke your nose and ask around. Politicians love it when a plan comes together, that is, they don’t get caught. This is simply a convenient way of lying to you whilst their own conscience is clear because they don’t think it’s lying. As I said it is somewhat Orwellian. In the mean time yet another tradition is being swept aside for the sake of good publicity, puerile politics and, I feel, not a little laziness too.

This is all very confusing. Good thing I don’t ever have to count that high. :D

But 1 to the 12 power was the number of times I was cursing at my computer!

Hey Stuart, I got the problem fixed: it appears that FireFox has got some problems with it’s new 1.0.2 browser: It doesn’t like certian types of PHP files! Everything seems to be working, just can’t use FireFox to do it with. Hummmmmmmmm =)
10 April 2005, 18:40
What sort of PHP files?
10 April 2005, 18:49
Ah! x-httpd-php! Is this anything to do with your DTD?
10 April 2005, 20:21
OK, Stuart…... Exlpain to me, the birds and the bees and my pesky DTD? What is my DTD?

But yes, you got it, that is the PHP file that Firfox realy hates on my machine!

=)
10 April 2005, 22:22
Your DTD is what sits at the top of the page and tells your browser which form of HTML/XHTML you are using. Could you copy the whole of your “head” section to a txt file (including the opening “body” tag) and email it to me please?
10 April 2005, 22:36
Stuart——-Its fixed now, the fine folks over at WordPress came up the idea, “clear my cache”! Go figure eh? Well Forefox is running again on my machine! WooHoo!
10 April 2005, 22:38
Cache? What on earth was in there then?
10 April 2005, 22:44
It sure wasn’t money——I’ll tell ya that right now! lol But it fixed it in 2 seconds. Unreal eh? I have no idea what was in there??????????
